Royal Oak Real Estate Information

Following Detroit's mid-century manufacturing boom, the Royal Oak real estate market expanded with small to mid-sized homes to accomodate the employees of surrounding industries.

Many of these homes for sale in Royal Oak are red-brick and clapboard bungalows and garrison houses typical of the American Midwest. Sitting on neatly rowed lots with open front lawns, they create a family-friendly community atmosphere.

Moving towards downtown Royal Oak, homes in more traditional styles can be found within the more leafy, well-established neighborhoods. Cape Cod, Foursquare, and prairie Craftsman styles are all on display here in full splendor. Newer constructions in these areas have largely kept with the colonial new-traditional aesthetic, making extensive use of stone pillars, wide porches, exterior shutters, and clapboard in muted colors.

Royal Oak is also undergoing considerable development around its downtown core and at some of its margins. Keep a look out for sleek and simple detached homes in modern styles, townhomes in cozy designer communities, and fashionable lofts near the heart of this buzzing city.

It's no surprise that Royal Oak got caught up in Detroit's 20th century boom, given that its only 20 minutes between the two downtown areas.

Royal Oak's downtown area is focused between Washington Avenue and Main Street, and mostly around their intersection with Eleven Mile Road. More commercial properties run up Woodward Avenue on Royal Oak's western side, until they reach Beaumont Hospital Royal Oak. The area around this hospital features many retail options, townhomes, a golf course, and parks.

Royal Oak's northwest corner hosts a small area of light commercial and industrial property. At Royal Oak's north central edge, residents can enjoy a cluster of parks surrounding Royal Oak High School. These parks include a community center, ice arena, and wooded area.

The other golf course in the area is Red Run Golf Club, named after the river that runs underneath Royal Oak. Royal Oak's northeast portion is home to the Mark Twain Dog Park, and just beyond the city's borders lies another major commercial corridor along Stephenson Highway and Chrysler freeway. This area has a Costco, Home Depot, and the Oakland Mall.

Another commercial and services center lies at the intersection of Twelve Mile and Campbell Road in the central-east portion of Royal Oak. Royal Oak's southern and eastern edges are bordered by the I-696 and I-75, meeting at the city's southeastern corner.

Following the economic readjustments of the 90s and 2000s, downtown Royal Oak has become a trendy entertainment destination in the Detroit area. Bars, restaurants, and new condo developments have spring up in recent years, with more improvements on the way.

Schools in Royal Oak, MI

Most students in Royal Oak are served by Royal Oak Neighborhood Schools, including Royal Oak Middle School, and Royal Oak High School. The area also hosts a branch of Oakland Community College, and Shrine Catholic, a private high school.
