More About Shelby Township Real Estate
Neighborhoods on either side of Shelby Township's central Van Dyke Avenue host many of the area's more well-established homes. Built from the 1940s onward, these homes display classic 20th-century architectural trends in a combination of brick and clapboard.
Large ranch and split-level homes on spacious yards are found throughout these areas, with a mix of newer constructions as well. Newer homes in these areas tend towards more Colonial, farm-like trends, yet maintain the overall aesthetic of understated elegance.
Yards are often simple, with gentle green lawns running right up the road, no fences, and one or two well-established trees for shade. Back lots are large enough to accommodate pools, sheds, and detached garages in some cases, with ample space for large pets or for kids to play.
Similar trends are also evident in some of Shelby Township's more outlying neighborhoods, only on a smaller scale in single-story cottages and bungalows. For example, Shelby Village in southwest Shelby Township displays some of these simple new-traditional homes. These properties are perfect for those just entering the real estate market, or those looking to downsize into a simpler, more economical space.
The outskirts of Shelby Township have, in recent years, seen a lot of residential development. The newer homes in these areas draw from an eclectic mix of traditional European styles and trends. Palladian windows, voussoir and quoin details, tall complex roof-lines, decorative stone work, towers, and imposing entryways are some of the common features at this end of the market.

Shelby Township Area Information
Shelby Township is only 30 minutes directly north of Downtown Detroit. It's northern edge borders Washington Township, blending into the vast rolling Michigan farmland beyond.
State Highway 53 (Van Dyke Freeway) bisects the middle of Shelby, running north-south, and the State Highway 59 (Hall Road) runs east-west along its southern edge.
Parks & Recreation
Shelby Charter Township has many opportunities for recreation and outdoor fun. Its proximity to Lake St. Clair, the many golf courses nearby, and the retail and entertainment centers throughout the Detroit Metro area, to name just a few.
However, within Shelby, there are also some notable attractions:
- Stony Creek Metropark - This park connects to larger park with a lake and golf course
- River Bends Park - Follows Clinton River up towards Bloomer Park on the western edge of Shelby
- Cherry Creek Golf Club - Located in central Shelby township
And if you're looking for adventure of the more indoor variety, at Shelby's southeast corner a large shopping center complex offers a huge selection of places to eat, shop, and enjoy yourself. Not the least of these is the huge Lakeside Mall just across Hall Road.

Students in Shelby Township are mostly served by Utica Community Schools, with a minority falling under Romeo Community Schools.
